Artist Statement

Climbing high mountains and walking thousands of miles on trails through-out my life has graced me with a deep reverence for the outdoors. I paint in oils. I reference water, trees, ridges, mountains, valleys and canyons in my compositions. I use brushwork, color, and scale to create a personal narrative about standing on a mountain summit, next to a river, under a forest canopy, or on a canyon rim.  I feel an affinity for the work of early, American landscape artists from the 20th century.

In the studio, I reference photographs taken by my climbing/hiking partner or myself.  I deconstruct the landscape into an amalgam of line, shape, and color; ever searching for a balance between realism and abstraction. I incorporate under-painting and intentional mark-making to maximize the physicality of the medium. My palette consists of basic pigments - red, yellow, blue, orange, purple, green, and white - which I mix in the painting process to achieve fresh colors.

Background

Jan’s interest in art began in childhood. In addition to art classes, she was always creating a drawing, sculpture, or a painting in her free-time. A watercolor painting earned her a Scholastic Award in high school. As an adult, she continued drawing in pen and ink to capture landscape, and city-scape, scenes from her travels through New Zealand, Nepal, India, and Costa Rica. She also drew historic homes when she was living in Fort Collins, CO. She was a potter for five years and quilter for another 10 years. Throughout her adult life, she has drawn the figure and considers it the ultimate landscape.

Jan has extensive domestic and international, high-altitude, mountaineering experience. Her summits include the three highest volcanoes in Mexico (Popocatepetl, 17,887'; Iztaccihuatl, 17,342'; and Pico de Orizaba, 18,700'); the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, Cerro Aconcagua (22,840') on the border of Chile and Argentina; the two highest volcanoes in Ecuador, Chimborazo (20,703') and Cotopaxi (19,348'); Mt. Tupangato (21,555') in Argentina; El Misty (19,101') in Peru; the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,300') and Mt. Meru (14,977’) in Tanzania and fifty-seven mountains over 14,000’ in Colorado (the 14’ers).  In addition, she has trekked extensively in Nepal and New Zealand.

Jan attended Colorado State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Exercise Science ('79), a Master of Education degree in Adult Education ('88) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a Concentration in Painting ('17).
