Artist Statement

My artwork is about synthesizing what I see and feel into a personal narrative. Subjects are deconstructed into an amalgam of line, shape and color. I play with a balance between realism and abstraction. I paint primarily in oils. I incorporate under-painting and intentional mark-making to maximize the expressive quality of the medium. My simple palette consists of red, yellow, orange, blue, purple, green, and white which I mix while painting to create original colors.

  Background

Jan’s passion for art began in childhood. Art was her favorite subject through-out her public schooling. A watercolor painting earned her a Scholastic Award in high school. As an adult, she continued to draw in pen and ink while she traveled internationally as well as worked in the Rocky Mountains. She drew historic homes on commission and currently paints en plein air and converts selected works to notecards.

Jan attended Colorado State University for her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, concentration in Painting (2017). She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Exercise Science (1979), and a Master of Education degree in Adult Education (1988).
